What Hedge Cutting Costs in the UK

A typical residential hedge cutting job in the UK runs between £100 and £350. Small garden borders can be as little as £40 to £80. Large boundary hedges, particularly overgrown leylandii, can reach £400 to £800 or more once access equipment and green waste removal are factored in.

The single biggest variable is where you live. Gardener charge-out rates in London and the South East run roughly 30 to 40 per cent above the national average, driven by higher wages, parking, congestion charges and tip fees. A hedge that costs £150 in County Durham can cost £220 for the same work in Surrey.

What Moves Your Price

Species. Leylandii is the most expensive common hedge to maintain in Britain. It grows fast, gets dense, and typically needs two or three cuts a year. Yew and laurel are slower to cut cleanly than beech or privet. Our calculator weights each species separately.

Height. Anything above roughly two metres changes the job. Ladders, tripods or a platform come into play, along with a second person for safety. That is where costs step up sharply rather than rising smoothly.

Condition. A hedge cut every year is a maintenance job. A hedge left for three years is a restoration job, and it can cost two to three times as much for the same length because of the volume of material coming off.

Green waste. Tip charges vary by council and some sites now charge trade waste rates for garden arisings. If you have space to compost or a garden waste bin, leaving the cuttings can save £15 to £60 depending on volume.

Access. Rear gardens reached only through the house, hedges backing onto a neighbour's land, or anything near overhead cables all add time and sometimes require permission.

When to Cut a Hedge in Britain

The nesting bird season runs roughly from March to August. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act it is an offence to damage or destroy an active nest, and responsibility sits with whoever does the cutting. Most reputable gardeners will check a hedge before starting and will decline work if they find an active nest.

In practice this pushes most heavy hedge work into late summer and autumn, which compresses demand into a shorter window and can lift quoted prices from September onwards. If your hedge is not urgent, booking outside that peak is the simplest way to save money.

Boundary Hedges and Your Neighbour

You are generally entitled to cut back growth that overhangs your boundary, up to the boundary line. The cuttings technically remain your neighbour's property, so the polite convention is to offer them back. For a shared hedge, agreeing the work with your neighbour first avoids a dispute that costs far more than the trim.

If a neighbour's evergreen hedge is over two metres and blocking your light, the High Hedges provisions of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act give councils in England and Wales a formal complaints route, though most councils charge a fee and expect you to have tried to resolve it directly first.
