Hedge and Shrub Removal Cost Guide

Removal is a fundamentally different job from trimming, and the price reflects that. Trimming takes material off the outside of a plant. Removal means felling it, excavating the root plate, and disposing of everything that comes out. As a rule of thumb, removing a hedge costs somewhere between five and ten times what one trim of the same hedge would cost.

Why Removal Costs So Much More Than Trimming

The root plate is the real work. An established hedge that has been in the ground twenty years has a root system as wide as the hedge is tall. Cutting the top off takes an hour. Getting the roots out can take a full day, and on a mature leylandii or laurel run it may need a mini digger.

The volume of waste is enormous. A trim produces clippings. A removal produces the entire plant. Green waste disposal is charged by load or by weight, and a thirty metre hedge can easily be six or seven trailer loads.

There is no repeat business. A gardener trimming your hedge is buying a relationship, and prices accordingly. A removal is a one-off, so it is priced as a standalone job with no future work to offset it.

Cut to Ground Level, or Full Root Removal?

This is the single biggest decision affecting your price, and the most common source of misunderstanding between homeowner and contractor.

Cut to ground level means the hedge is felled and the stumps are left in the soil. It is much cheaper, often around 40 per cent of a full removal. It is fine if you are laying a patio over the area or the stumps are somewhere you will never dig. It is not fine if you want to plant, lay a lawn, or put in a fence, because the stumps will be in the way and some species will resprout vigorously from a cut stump.

Full removal takes out the stumps and main root plate, leaving ground you can work with. It costs substantially more but avoids paying twice when you discover the stumps are a problem.

Stump grinding sits between the two. It reduces stumps to chips below soil level without excavating the whole root system. It is a reasonable compromise for lawns, less so for anything requiring deep digging.

What Makes a Removal Job Expensive

Access. If a mini digger can reach the hedge, the job may take a day. If everything has to come out through a house or down a narrow side passage by hand and barrow, the same hedge can take three days. Access is the factor most likely to double a quote.

Species. Leylandii, laurel and privet all have dense, spreading root systems. Beech and hornbeam are somewhat easier. Anything that has grown into a wall or fence line adds time and risk.

Soil. Clay and stony ground make excavation substantially slower than loose loam. Wet clay in winter is worse again.

Proximity to structures. Roots near a wall, drive, drain or fence mean careful hand work instead of machinery, and sometimes mean leaving part of the root plate in place.

Before You Remove a Hedge

Check whether you are allowed to. Boundary hedges may be jointly owned, in which case removal needs your neighbour's agreement. Properties in conservation areas, hedges covered by a tree preservation order, and some new-build estates with landscaping covenants all carry restrictions. In the United Kingdom, hedgerows in the countryside may additionally be protected under the Hedgerows Regulations 1997.

Timing matters too. Removing a hedge during nesting season risks destroying an active nest, which is an offence in the UK and restricted in several other jurisdictions. Most contractors will inspect first and postpone if they find one.
