How much does hedge trimming cost?
Everything that goes into a hedge trimming quote, what the numbers should look like, and how to tell whether the price in front of you is fair. If you just want a figure for your own hedge, the calculator will do it in about twenty seconds.
The short answer
For a typical residential hedge in reasonable condition, most people pay:
| Market | Typical job | Hourly crew rate | Minimum call-out |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $200 – $600 | $45 – $90 per person | $150 |
| United Kingdom | £150 – £450 | £30 – £55 per person | £110 |
| Australia | A$250 – A$700 | A$55 – A$95 per person | A$180 |
| New Zealand | NZ$280 – NZ$750 | NZ$60 – NZ$100 per person | NZ$190 |
Those ranges cover the middle of the market. Below them you're usually looking at a very small hedge or someone working without insurance. Above them you are usually looking at height, neglect or difficult access, all of which are fair reasons for a bigger number.
How a contractor actually builds your quote
Almost nobody prices hedges by the foot, whatever the advertising says. What they're really doing is estimating four things and adding them up.
1. How long it will take
This is the bulk of the bill. A two-person crew clears somewhere around 30 feet of well-maintained, chest-height hedge per hour, including the tidy-up. Every complicating factor is really a multiplier on that number: neglect roughly doubles it, dense evergreen adds a quarter, awkward access adds a third, and height can add anything from a little to a lot.
2. What it costs to get rid of the clippings
Green waste is bulky and disposal is charged by volume, so this line grows fast on a big or overgrown job. On a routine trim it might be ten percent of the total. On a four-year-neglected leylandii boundary it can be a quarter. It is also the easiest thing to negotiate, because if you can take the waste yourself it costs the contractor nothing to leave it.
3. Whether they can reach it
Below roughly six feet, a crew works off the ground. Between six and nine they are on steps or using long-reach gear, which is slower and more tiring but needs no extra kit. Above nine feet, platforms and towers enter the picture and they appear on the invoice as their own line. This threshold is the sharpest price jump in the whole job.
4. What the local market bears
The same hedge costs meaningfully more in London, New York or Sydney than in a rural county, because wages, insurance, fuel and tip fees all cost more there. A good calculator asks about this. A bad one quotes you a national average and leaves you to work out why every quote you receive is higher.
Prices by job type
| Job | What's involved | US price |
|---|---|---|
| Routine trim, maintained hedge | Season's growth off, waste taken away | $200 – $600 |
| Overgrown cut-back | Two to four years of growth, heavy waste | $400 – $1,200 |
| Height reduction | Dropping the top by 1–3 ft, then reshaping | $300 – $900 |
| Renovation prune | Hard cut into old wood over two seasons | $500 – $1,500 |
| Full removal | Felling, roots, haulage | $900 – $3,000+ |
Use the removal calculator for the last of those, since it prices root treatment separately and that is where most of the variation lives.
Prices by species
Species matters less than condition or height, but it isn't nothing. We have a detailed breakdown for the ones people ask about most:
- Leylandii. Fast, dense and unforgiving, and the most expensive common hedge to keep.
- Laurel. Should be pruned by hand rather than sheared, which affects the price.
- Privet. Quick and forgiving, at the cheap end.
- Boxwood. Cheap to trim, expensive to shape formally.
- Arborvitae. Usually priced per tree rather than per foot.
Five ways to pay less without cutting corners
- Trim more often. The single biggest saving available. Two visits a year on a hedge that never gets away from you routinely costs less in total than one visit on a hedge that has.
- Handle the green waste. If you have a green bin, a compost heap or a trailer, ask what comes off the price.
- Bundle the work. Small jobs each hit the minimum call-out. Combined into one visit, you pay for the time instead.
- Drop below the ladder line. If your hedge is just over the height where equipment becomes necessary, one reduction now makes every future cut cheaper.
- Book off-peak. Late spring is the busiest period and prices firm up. Autumn and winter work, where the species allows it, is easier to negotiate.
What a written quote should say
Whether green waste removal is included. Whether access equipment is a separate charge. What happens if the job overruns. Whether they carry public liability insurance, and for how much. A contractor who won't put those four things in writing is telling you something useful.
